  3. Safety: A skills course can help improve your safety awareness while mountain biking. You’ll learn to assess potentially dangerous situations better and respond to them appropriately. By learning the right techniques you minimise the risk of crashes and injuries.
  4. Fun and enjoyment: By improving your riding technique you’ll have more fun and enjoyment when mountain biking. You’ll be able to ride more demanding trails and take on new challenges. What do I need for the skills / bike technique course?

  1. Mountain bike: You need a suitable mountain bike that meets the requirements of the course. It must be in good condition and have the necessary features relevant to the course. For a Basic & Safety Skills or Trail Skills training session a hardtail is enough; from Master Skills onwards we recommend at least an all-mountain bike.
  2. Protective gear: Safety comes first. A bike helmet is mandatory and must meet current safety standards. In addition, knee pads, elbow pads and gloves can be useful to protect you from injury.
  3. Suitable clothing: Wear comfortable sportswear that gives you plenty of freedom of movement. Choose breathable materials that protect you from the weather and wick away moisture. Depending on the weather it may also be wise to bring extra layers or a rain jacket.
  4. Cycling shoes: We recommend wearing cycling shoes with a stiff, flat sole. These provide better power transfer to the pedals and improve your grip on the bike.
  5. Water bottle or hydration pack: It’s important to carry enough fluids during the course. A water bottle or hydration pack lets you stay hydrated during the exercises and training. We recommend a bottle!
  6. Snacks and food: Depending on the length of the course, you should bring enough snacks and food to cover your energy needs. Energy bars, fruit or nuts are good options for snacks between meals.
  7. Tools and spare parts: It’s always worth carrying a few basic tools and spare parts so you can make minor repairs to your bike. A multi-tool, spare inner tube, a pump and a chain breaker can come in handy. If something breaks, we bring tools and spare parts with us.
  8. Personal first-aid kit: It’s advisable to carry a small first-aid kit so you can give first aid in case of minor injuries or crashes. Plasters, disinfectant and bandages are useful. We bring a large first-aid kit with us.

Yes, an MTB skills course for advanced riders makes sense. Even experienced mountain bikers can benefit from developing their riding technique further.

An advanced skills course offers the chance to further improve and refine specific skills and techniques. Topics such as cornering, jumping, steep descents, clearing obstacles, climbs and descents on different surfaces and difficulty levels can be covered. Our instructors have the expertise and are qualified to help optimise existing skills and learn new techniques.

Such a course can also help to increase safety and confidence on the bike. Advanced riders can test their limits without exposing themselves to unnecessary risks. Through guidance and individual feedback, the instructor can help identify and correct possible mistakes or inefficient techniques.

How often you should take an e-bike or bike skills course depends on various factors, such as your current level of knowledge, your goals and your personal progress. However, there are a few guidelines that can help you decide how often to take a skills course:

  1. First time: If you’ve never taken a skills course or have only just started mountain biking or e-biking, it’s advisable to complete at least one basic skills course. This helps you learn the fundamental techniques and skills needed to ride safely and effectively.
  2. Advanced riders: If you already have solid fundamentals and are at an advanced level, it can make sense to take skills courses regularly to develop and refine your skills. Advanced courses offer more specific techniques and challenges that can help you improve your riding ability.
  3. Specific goals or weak points: If you have certain goals, such as mastering a particular technique or clearing difficult obstacles, then a skills course focused on these aspects will help you further. In our private courses / coaching sessions we can tailor things to you. This lets you work specifically on your weak points and reach your goals faster.
  4. Periodic refreshers: It’s also advisable to take skills courses regularly to refresh and further improve your abilities. This can help correct bad habits and learn new techniques that have developed over time.

We recommend taking part in a course or workshop once a year.

An MTB skills course or e-bike skills course can definitely be worth it. Here are some reasons why an e-bike course or MTB course can pay off:

  1. Improving your riding technique: A skills course lets you improve your mountain bike technique. You’ll learn new techniques, exercises and tips from qualified instructors that help you clear obstacles safely, take corners more efficiently, master jumps and generally have more control over your bike. This can lead to a better riding experience and more fun on the trail.
  2. Safety: Attending a skills course can increase your safety while mountain biking. You’ll learn to assess dangerous situations better and respond appropriately. By learning the right techniques you minimise the risk of crashes and injuries. A safe riding style helps you feel more comfortable on the bike and have more confidence in your abilities.
  3. Confidence: A skills course can strengthen your confidence on the mountain bike. By learning new skills and applying them in a controlled environment, you gain more trust in your own abilities. You’re better equipped to take on harder trails and challenges. The increased confidence has a positive effect on your riding experience and lets you keep developing.
  4. Connecting with like-minded riders: At a skills course you’ll meet other mountain bike enthusiasts who are also keen to improve their riding technique. Sharing experiences, tips and tricks can be inspiring and motivating. A community forms in which you can learn from one another and support each other.
  5. Adapting to new technology: If you ride an e-bike or are planning to switch to one, a skills course designed specifically for e-bikes can be very useful. You’ll learn how to handle the specific characteristics and power of an e-bike and get information on how to make the most of the various support levels and features.

Yes, you can take part in a skills course with clipless pedals. In fact, it’s a good idea to ride with the pedals you normally use, so you have a realistic riding feel and can apply the techniques to your preferred type of pedal.

Clipless pedals can offer many advantages when mountain biking, such as improved power transfer and stability. However, they also require some practice and getting used to, as you must be able to release your feet from the pedals quickly when you’re in a critical situation or ready to get off.

During a skills course you’ll do various exercises involving braking, balancing, cornering, clearing obstacles and other riding techniques. Your instructor will show you how to apply these techniques safely with your clipless pedals. It’s advisable to do a few exercises at home or in a safe place before the course, to get familiar with clipping in and out and to build confidence in releasing the pedals.

It’s important to note that in some situations it can make sense to use flat pedals, especially if you have no experience with clipless pedals yet or are in technically demanding sections where quick dismounts may be needed. Your instructor can give you recommendations on which pedals are best suited for the course.

All in all, it’s both possible and common to take part in a skills course with clipless pedals, as long as you feel comfortable with them and are able to release your feet from the pedals safely and quickly when needed.

Clean riding technique is learned better with flat pedals!
