Mountain Biking at Achensee & in the Karwendel — Trails, Location and Conditions
Achensee and the Karwendel are a rare combination in Tyrolean mountain biking: a drinking-water lake at 950 m and, right beside it, the largest mountain massif in the Northern Alps with huts and alpine pastures. Anyone wanting to combine bike coaching with a genuine refreshing break is in the right place. The tour network ranges from the Achensee panorama trail at lake level to long Karwendel tours with hut access — from a leisurely day out to a fitness tour, anything is possible.
Areas at a glance
- Achensee tours: several signposted MTB routes around the lake — Achensee panorama trail, Riederbergweg, Krautried — mostly intermediate with a scenic character
- Karwendel tours: Bärenbadalm, Feilkopf, Gramai Gernalm, Rotwand Bächental — alpine day tours with climbs up to staffed mountain huts
- Karwendel mountain railway from Pertisau: as an uphill aid for the high-altitude Karwendel tours
What suits you?
- Trail and flow fans: the Karwendel is classic Tyrolean bike terrain — more tour character than pure lift-served bike parks, with long descents and natural singletrails
- E-bike leisure riders: this area is one of the best in Tyrol for e-bike tours to staffed mountain huts — Gramai Alm, Gernalm, Bärenbadalm and Feilalm all lie on classic bike routes. Long, relaxed tours with a hut stop and a swim break in the lake are the speciality here
- Beginners and families: the Achensee panorama trail at lake level is one of the most relaxed bike routes in Tyrol — perfect for easy-going family days with a swim break at the lake
If the weather closes in at Achensee, the Inntal trails (Innsbruck, Schwaz) and the western side of the Karwendel are reachable in 20–40 minutes — we switch at short notice.
